What is the new health program for former foster youth?

If you were in foster care in Washington and receiving Apple Health (Medicaid) at age 18 or on the date you aged out of foster care (up to 21 years old), you are eligible for Apple Health coverage until you age 26. You must be a Washington resident and meet citizenship and immigration requirements to qualify for coverage as a former foster youth. There is no income limit for this coverage.

How do I apply for Former Foster Youth Program?

If you age out of foster care in Washington starting in 2014 you do not need to complete an application for Apple Health. You will be automatically transitioned to the Former Foster Care program when you age out of foster care.

If you already left foster care, you are eligible for Apple Health coverage as a former foster youth. Call the Foster Care Medical Team (FCMT) to enroll: 1-800-562-0322, ext. 15480.

If you aged out of foster care in another state and are now living in Washington, you will not qualify for health care coverage as a former foster youth, but other programs are available.  Apply for health care coverage through the Healthplanfinder at www.healthplanfinder.org.

What if my medical coverage stopped before I turned 26?

Sometimes former foster children leave the state, request termination of their medical, or their cases were closed because of a system error. If one of these situations applies to you and you need health care coverage reopened, please contact the FCMT at 1-800-562-0322, ext. 15480.

What health services are covered?

There are important difference between coverage received as a child and coverage received as an adult. As an adult, coverage does not cover every health service. While the coverage includes many services like doctor visits, prescription drugs, and hospitalizations, check the Apple Health Medical Benefits or talk to your doctor to find out if a specific service is covered.

Do you have questions?

If you are a former foster youth and have questions about Apple Health coverage, contact at 1-800-562-0322, ext. 15480, to get assistance with applying for medical coverage.
